Harrison Hansen : « Be the best version of myself »
Harrison Hansen, new Pia player, talks about his years at Toulouse Olympique and his signing in Super XIII.
Harrison, can you introduce yourself?
I’m Harrison Hansen, 39 years old. I’ve played 513 games so far and counting.
How do you explain the loss against Wakefield in the final?
I think it was just a game too far for us in the end, and Wakefield were on fire. It would have taken a monumental effort to beat them, but they were just too strong.
What do you remember from your five years at TO?
There have been lots of highs and lows during my five years at Toulouse, but coming here was the best decision for me and my family. We have loved every minute, and the opportunity for my kids to learn and speak French has been amazing. Obviously, the main highlight of my time here was getting promoted to Super League. It was immense for the club and everyone associated to finally complete Super League status. I’ll never forget it.
Why did you leave TO for Pia? In my opinion, you still have the level to stay in the Championship.
The contact with Pia happened very quickly. A few calls with the coaches and the presidents, and then it was all set, with me moving up to Pia within a few weeks. They knew I wanted to continue playing, and they were happy to have me on board.
Toulouse and I just had different opinions on the direction we wanted to take. I wanted another year to play, but the club saw things differently… Potentially transitioning to a staff role. In the end, it just didn’t work out.
What do you think about the level in Super XIII?
From my first game last week, I think the level is quite high. The contact is very similar to the Championship, it is very physical. The pace and intensity of the game are probably a little below Championship standard, but there are still some skilled, strong athletes in this competition, which makes it a very competitive league.
What are your goals for this season?
My goal for this season is to be the best version of myself by bringing my experience and leadership qualities to the team. I want to help the team as much as I can to reach the finals and, hopefully, go on to win. That would be amazing. Who knows what will come after that, hopefully another year of playing as long as my body holds up… For now, I’m still in very good shape and always ready to play.
