Darren Fisher : « We work very hard »
We have met Darren Fisher, the National Head Coach of Spain who talks to us about the latest results of his team and the expansion of the game in Spain.
Darren, can you introduce yourself in a few words.
My name is Darren Fisher I’m the National Head Coach of Spain RL.
How did you become the spanish coach?
In 2013 myself and the board spoke about RL in Spain and what we thought was possible to achieve, I’m an ex professional and I’d been coaching in a professional environment for 10 years and the board appointed me to form an international side and the rest is history.
1 win 1 loss. How do you analyse your performance in this Euro B?
Considering we were beaten by both sides a couple of years ago, I have to be honest I was really pleased, the players were outstanding throughout.
What didn’t work against Serbia?
I think a lot did, the Serbians were much stronger with the Aussie’s on board and having their coach available makes a difference. I was pleased with a lot of passage of play obviously as always with a defeat there are things to work on, I don’t know a rugby league game where there’s nothing to learn from.
In 2019, Spain will try to qualify for the World Cup. Do you think you have what it takes to do it ?
Yes without doubt the passion and heart we have for this is real. We work very hard with opportunities we are given, we want to be there to lay a platform for the future of Spain RL to follow.
Everybody do not speak spanish and you don’t have much time with the group, it must be complicated to work in this situation?
Not really, I speak to my players individually and the team as a whole, the players know what I need from them and they know what they need to bring. My coaching staff is multilingual and my senior players understand our short and long term objectives and we share the same passion for it throughout.
