Rob Burrow : « Share my experience »
Treize Mondial has the honor to have an interview with Rob Burrow, the legend English Rugby League. Now retired, the former Leeds Rhinos player has accept to talk with us about his new life and his best memories of his playing career. Here we go !
Rob, can you introduce yourself to our public ?
I am Rob Burrow, I’ve recently retired from playing having been with Leeds Rhinos for the last 17 years.
You’ve played with a lot of great players. Who was you’re best Teammate ?
I’ve been lucky enough to play with some great players but if I had to name a couple I would have to say Kevin Sinfield & Danny Mcguire. Coming through the system with these guys I truly enjoyed the impact they brought to the club throughout the golden generation.
Who was you’re best opponent ?
My best opponent was probably Trent Barret. As a young half back at the time I felt the presence he had over his team, he was influential in everything the team did well from start to finish.
What’s your best memories as a player ?
My best memories were the first time I saw my name on the back of a rhinos shirt & the 2011 grand final when I got the Harry Sunderland award.
You was well known as « The Smallest Player In Super League ». Did your small size make you feel you have to work harder than the others to become a top player ?
My size was never a problem to me, I used my size to my advantage and made the most of the skills I had.
In modern Rugby League, do you think the physical clash has taken over the passing game ?
Superleague gets stronger & quicker each year aswell as the passing / skill factor. Both contact and intensity remain high and will continue to do so.
What do you think of the Catalans Dragons ? What represent for you as an english player the travels to Perpignan ?
I love the fact that there is a team in Catalans. I personally loved playing over in France because of the atmosphere and welcoming the of the French people. I always had a part of me that wished I could have had couple of years playing over there.
What do you think of the expension of Super League ? (Toronto, Toulouse, maybe New York..)
We need to grow our sport and having teams like this involved can only be good for the game.
After your retirement as a player, you have now started a coaching career with the Rhinos academy team. What do you think of this new role ?
I love my new role as head coach of the academy, I hope to bring through the next Golden generation of players and to help them experience some of the highs I was lucky enough the experience.
